Turnip fries

Turnips are trendy. They keep popping up on my google reader in recipes (or at least they were back in the fall).

The only turnips I had before these were pickled turnips, which are soooooooo good. I get them at Aladdin’s in Cleveland on my favorite meal, the “Lamb Rolled” or in a salad.

Determined to jump on the bandwagon and see if other turnip recipes were as tasty, I went with something simple: turnip fries. I sliced a turnip into fries, tossed in olive oil, added salt, pepper, and smoked paprika, and laid them out on a cookie sheet. I cooked at 425 until they got a little crispy, flipping once. They weren’t bad, though I did kinda burn them a bit. There was a strange taste I couldn’t identify–not sure if it was a turnip taste, a taste from this specific turnip, or a taste from burning the turnips. I ate them with some ketchup/sirachi and some kale greens on the side.

I’ll try another turnip recipe again sometime, though I don’t know if I’ll be able to beat the pickled turnips from Aladdin’s–I might TRY to make them though! Does anyone know any pickled turnips recipes or has anyone else had them from Aladdin’s (they have locations in other places besides Cleveland, too, I just have them every time I go to Cleveland)? Note, this is my attempt to get people to post comments… please answer 🙂
